LONGTIME MN FOOTBALL PARENT DOUG REYNOLDS, 57, SUCCUMBS TO CANCER

The Marple Newtown football family is mourning the loss of a longtime football parent and supporter, H. Douglas Reynolds. Affectionately known as "Doug," he and his wife Donna have supported the Marple Newtown Football Program for over a decade. Three of their sons, Marc, Nick and Stephen, played for the Tigers during their high school careers and all three were captains during their senior football season.

Doug and Donna were always at every football game at Harry Harvey Stadium or when the Tigers played on the road. You could always count on the Reynolds family being in the stands rooting for not only one of their sons, but the entire football team.

In the last couple of years, Doug and Donna always kept their spirits up and both did as much as they could for the football program even when Doug was battling his illness. Even though this past year was a tough battle for Doug, he did not miss a single football game and was even able to witness Stephen represent the Tigers in the Delaware County Hero Bowl.

Our hearts are filled with sadness at the loss of Doug.

One personal note:

When I started with the team back in 2005, every game I would be greeted with a smile and a handshake on my way up to the press box at Harry Harvey Stadium by Doug Reynolds. Doug always had something nice to say in support of the football program no matter what our win/loss record showed.

I can tell you that I will think of Doug when high school football starts in the fall. He will be missed by many others who sit in those stands as well.

Doug is survived by his wife Donna and his children Robert, Deena, Lisa, Nicholas, Marc, Michael, and Stephen; also survived by 4 grandchildren Dominic, Marco, Nicholas and Angelo and 2 step grand-children Isaiah and Madison. Brother of Amy Townsend and Diane Morrison

Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing on Monday evening, 6-9 PM at THE DONOHUE FUNERAL HOME, 3300 WEST CHESTER PIKE, NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA, 610-353-6300. Funeral Mass is Tuesday, 10 AM at St. Anastasia Church. Int. SS. Peter and Paul Cemetary.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to The American Diabetes Association, 150 Monument Road, Suite 100, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004 or The American Cancer Society, 1615 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA 19382.

Tigers Win by a Finger-Tip, Finish Season 6-6

By Greg Pecko

NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA - The Marple Newtown Tigers (6-6) escaped Friday night with a win by a finger tip over the Academy Park Knights (7-5).

With the score being 17-10 in favor of the Tigers Friday with only a little over two minutes left on the clock the Tigers made a mistake that set up probably the most memorable win of the 2008 campaign.

Junior quarterback Kevin Johnson fumbled the football on what looked to be a questionable call by the officials. However, after the dust cleared the Knights had the football and were on the Tigers' doorstep.

From there it would be up to the Tigers' defense and special teams to make something special happen in order to end the season at five hundred.

The Knights ran several plays that ran the clock down to a minute and they would finally punch the ball into the end-zone on a quarterback draw with only fifty seconds remaining. At that point it appeared as if the season may have to be extend into an overtime contest.

Unless the Tigers' special teams unit, which had already blocked a combine six field goal and extra point attempts, had other plans to end the night right on time. Under wet conditions the Knights lined-up an point after attempt and after a high snap the Tigers burst in on the right side of the line and two tigers were able to tip the ball, which float toward, but fell just short of the cross-bar making the score 17-16.

For the Tigers' this spelled victory as they went on to recover the onside kick and then came out in the victory formation to kneel the ball twice ending the season on high note a 6-6. The Tigers' finished this season by winning five straight games and six of their final seven of the season.

Friday nights win was fueled by a strong ground game led by Senior running backs Phil Graziano and Nick Stephens on the offensive side of the football. Additionally, Stephens and Senior Dan Giordano rallied their defensive squad in the second half which helped bring the Tigers back from an early 10-3 deficit.

For the 2008 Tigers football program the season came full-circle as they were able to recover from a rough start of the year with a young squad. As the season progressed a team that had 32 underclassmen including 21 sophomores was able to build confidence and chemistry, which led to a stellar end to the season.
