RIDLEY’S HUMES LEADS RAIDERS PAST TIGERS, 24-0
FOLSOM, PA – After looking back on Marple Newtown’s 2005 season, it’s easy to say that the 7-6 victory against Ridley on homecoming was memorable. When the Tigers look back on this year’s shutout loss at Ridley during their homecoming, they’ll want to close their eyes, fall asleep and forget the nightmare that happened on Friday the 13th.
The 3rd ranked defense in Delaware County, that hasn’t allowed an opposing offense score in over 188 minutes, gave up their first touchdown in four games with 9 seconds left in the first quarter.
Game Summary
The Tigers defense came out fired up and started off very well allowing only 5 yards in 3 plays on the Raiders first drive.
On Ridley’s second drive, which started at the Raiders 44, senior QB Al Humes hit senior RB Rocco Nicolino on 1st down for a gain of 20 and their first 1st down of 18 on the night; the Tigers had 8 total.
On the next play from the Marple Newtown 36, junior RB Andrew Hodges ran for a gain of 3, then was hit by senior DT Perry Koliatsis that forced a fumble which was recovered by junior DB Steve Giordano at the 33 yard line.
The Tigers only managed to go 14 yards in 5 plays after the turnover. The longest play of the drive was a 13 yard run by junior RB John Rutecki – he finished the game with 16 rushes for 100 yards. This was Marple Newtown’s best drive of the half and lasted just over 3 minutes. In the first half, the crushing Ridley defense held Marple Newtown to 24 yards in 18 plays and 9:36 time of possession.
The Ridley Raiders started their third drive at 4:41 in the first and completely dominated the Tiger’s defense. That drive went 75 yards in 11 plays ending on 3rd & 3 from the Tiger’s 9 – Al Humes hit senior WR Marcus Payton for 6 points with 0:09 left in the first quarter (Ekrem Uysaler extra point attempt is good).
Ridley’s next drive (fourth) started on their own 49, going 51 yards in 4 plays. Humes found Payton one more time on 3rd & 11 for a gain of 18 and another touchdown with 9:01 left in the second quarter (Uysaler extra point attempt is good).
On the fifth Ridley drive that started on the Marple 45, the Radiers went 55 yards in 9 plays, this time ending on an 8 yard pass completion from Humes to Rocco Nicolino for a touchdown with 3:38 left in the half (Uysaler extra point attempt is good).
Al Humes top three targets were Rocco Nicolino 5-63, Marcus Payton 5-50 and senior WR Eric Mease 3-29. Humes ended the night with 18 completions on 23 attempts, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions.
In the second half, the Raiders ended their 8th and final scoring drive of the game off of the foot of junior K Ekrem Uysaler. Uysaler made a 29 yard field goal attempt with 9:33 left in the 4th quarter.
The Tigers never sniffed the end zone the entire game, the closest they came was getting to the Ridley 43 late in the 4th with 3:13 left in the game.
THE DEFENSE, by the numbers
The top 5 defensive contributions by tackles and other noteworthy stats:
Dave Hansell – 12 (including ½ TFL, ½ sack)

Shane Breslin – 6 (including 2 TFLs, sack, QB hurry)

TIGERS SILENCE THE LION’S ROAR ON HOMECOMING, 7-0
NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA – The Marple Newtown Tigers have conquered their last three opponents including a high-quality and skillful Strath Haven squad. Two out of last three games were against pedestrian football teams at best – one at home and one the road.
After playing superior defense and building momentum on offense over the last four games, the Tigers were looking to bring the homecoming crowd a victory. Marple Newtown did just that but Penncrest made it quite a challenge through 3 ½ quarters of football at Harry Harvey Stadium. Eventually, this victory would necessitate a goal line stand by the Tigers with less than a minute left in regulation.
Did you actually think four consecutive shutouts would be easy? Read on, friends…
Game Summary
The Tigers first drive ended with a fumble by senior TE Pat Aigeldinger. Marple Newtown was driving fairly efficiently when on 3rd & 17 from their 39 senior QB Jon Liberty passed complete to Aigeldinger over the middle. Almost immediately Aigeldinger was hit by senior LB Mike Quintains, forcing the fumble and recovering for the Lions on the 44-yard line in their territory.
The Lions first drive went zero yards in three plays before punting to junior HB John Rutecki – fair caught at the Tigers 23 yard line. On their second drive, Marple Newtown’s offense got a jump-start by Liberty. Looking very McNabb-esque, Liberty, on 3rd and 3 from the Marple 30 tucked the ball and ran for a gain of 40 yards along the Tiger’s sideline to the Lion’s 30-yard line. After that play, the Tigers only managed 2 more yards before junior DL Jeff Scheckner sacked Liberty.
Niether offense was able to get much going until late in the second quarter. On the Tigers fourth drive of the first half Marple Newtown started in their territory from the 39-yard line. Liberty, Rutecki, and junior HB John Gallagher would rush collectively for 13 yards on 3 plays and a first down. That set up a 23-yard pass completion from Liberty to Gallagher bringing the ball to the Penncrest 25 yard line. On 3rd & 7 from the 22-yard line, Gallagher ran the ball all the way into the endzone, but a holding penalty was called downfield negating the touchdown. Liberty would pass incomplete two more times on 3rd and 4th down.
The Lions fourth drive was the closest they came to scoring in the first half as they drove the ball all the way down the field to the Tigers 15 yard line going 55 yards in 9 plays. The longest play of the drive was a 21-yard run by senior RB Patrick O’Donnell on 2nd & 10 from the Penncrest 43 that brought the ball into Tiger’s territory to the 36-yard line. Antoher 14 yard run by the fullback on 2nd & 8 from the Tiger’s 34 eventually set-up a 32 yard failed field goal attempt from the 15 by junior K Casey Desiderio with 1:32 left to go in the second quarter. The field goal attempt was tipped by the defense.
On their fifth drive of the game, Marple Newton would make it to the Lion’s 26-yard line but simply ran out of time. On 1st & 10 junior Steve Giordano rushed for 17 yards and then Gallagher rushed for 20 over the next two plays. Liberty passed complete to Steve Giordano on the fourth play of the drive setting up 1st & 10 at the Lions 26. Marple Newtown was only able to get off two more plays – one incomplete pass and one rush before time expired.
The first drive for the Tigers in the second half (sixth of the game) came after the Penncrest offense went 7 yards in 4 plays. Marple Newtown took over on downs from the Lions 32 yard line. On 1st & 10 Liberty passed complete to Steve Giordano for a pick up of 14 yards and a first down. Rutecki rushed for another 14 yards on the second play of the drive and Giordano ran for another 2. After Rutecki ran for a loss on 2nd & 8 at the 2-yard line, Jon Liberty found the endzone on a 3-yard keeper and a touchdown (Seiler extra point is good) with 7:27 left in the third quarter.
On the Tigers next drive (seventh of the game), they went 83 yards in 13 plays burning over 5 minutes off the clock. That drive resulted in zero points for the Tigers after an 8 yard run by Liberty on 2nd & 10 for a touchdown was called back due to a hold and a failed 26 yard field goal attempt by Ted Seiler with 10:32 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers last drive of the game brought them into Penncrest territory to the 36-yard line but once again penalties got the best of the offense – they went 21 yards in 9 plays eating 6:32 off the clock.
With 2:30 remaining, the Penncrest Lions took over from their own 14-yard line. Mike Quitans ran for a gain of 3 on 1st down, O’Donnell for a gain of 11 on 2nd down. Senior QB E.J. Calderoni passed complete to Quintans for 24 yards to the Tiger’s 48-yard line. On 2nd & 8 from the 46, Calderoni dropped back to pass only to be sacked for a loss of 1 by senior DE Shane Breslin and junior DE Pete Massaro. It looked bleak for the Lions as they had little time left to keep moving the ball. On 3rd and long from the 47, Calderoni would run for a gain of 15 yards and another 1st down. A 5 yard penalty was assessed on the before the seventh play of the drive. On 1st & 15 from the 37-yard line, Calderoni hit found sophomore WR Rick Bailey on the far sideline and was tackled at the 2 by John Gallagher.
On 1st and goal from the 2, Patrick O’Donnell was mobbed by the entire defensive line for allowing no gain on the play. On 2nd down Calderoni passed incomplete as the pass was broken up by sophomore DB Dan Giordano. On 3rd down, Calderoni rushed to the open space on the left side of the field only to be met by Pat Aigeldinger and Steve Giordano for a loss – that was the last play of the game as time expired. The goal line stand at the 2-yard line was an incredible end to another hard fought victory for the Tigers.

Game 7 vs. Ridley in Folsom, PA
The 2006 Tigers football team will play their seventh game on Friday, October 13, 2006 against the Ridley Raiders at Ridley High School in Folsom, PA. Mark your calendars and be sure to come out and support the Tigers!
The Last Word
Senior TE/LB Pat Aigeldinger was kicking himself after the game despite a game saving tackle on the last play that extended the Tigers winning streak to 4 games. He could not seem to shake the fumble he allowed in the first quarter of the game from a Liberty pass over the middle. He made the tough catch only to get thumped after he caught it forcing the fumble and a turnover.
This kid is very competitive and hopefully learned a good lesson: Hang in there, stay focused and good things will happen. Aigeldinger stayed focused and made a heck of a play at the end of the game to continue the Tigers shutout streak.
It made me think of another story of redemption that happened 13 years ago to the exact day. Aigeldinger was probably only 5, maybe 6 years old?
On October 6, 1993 the Philadelphia Phillies played game 1 of the NLCS versus the Atlanta Braves at Veterans Stadium in South Philly.
With the Braves trailing 3-2 at the top of the 9th, Kim Batiste replaced Dave Hollins playing 3rd base. Mark Lemke reached first base on a Batiste error that eventually lead to a 3-3 tie.
The game went into the 10th inning and Batiste was the third batter after Mariano Duncan grounded out and John Kruk doubled to right. With one out and Kruk on second base, Batiste, off a Greg McMichael pitch doubled to left field driving in Kruk all the way from second base. Game over. Philles win, 4-3.
Kim Batiste, who earlier bared the weight of that crucial error and possible loss, went from zero to hero in one play.
Like Batiste, Aigeldinger hung in there, stay focused and good things happened.

TIGERS DECLAW PANTHERS IN NEWTOWN SQUARE, 24-0
NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA – On a damp and clear evening, the Strath Haven Panthers came to Marple Newtown High School looking confident and strong. The large Strath Haven Marching Band entered Harry Harvey Stadium as if they were invading it and just by looking over at the visitor grandstands, its hard to say if anyone was left in Wallingford.
The 2-2 Panthers (Aka Goliath) officially entered the building and were ready to prove to the Central Lague that they were still a juggernaut. Sure, Strath Haven was aware that Marple Newtown is capable of knocking off a big dog (or cat) like Upper Darby two years ago or Ridley last season.
Apparently however, they underestimated the Tiger’s defensive line (aptly nicknamed the Wolfpack) anchored by Pete Massaro and the firepower of Marple Newtown’s offense (which even surprised this scribe) lead by Jon Liberty.
Game Summary
The Panthers offense came right out of the on the first drive of the game clawing the Tigers defense and taking the ball 25 yards in 11 plays.
The drive started from their own 44-yard line after a 14-yard kickoff return by senior HB Aaron Benson. On 1st & 10 junior HB Eric Frasier ran for a gain of 7, and on 2nd down for a gain of 1. Senior Panther Rich MacCleary – a bruising fullback – took over gaining 3 and Strath Haven’s first 1st down of the night. On 1st down from the Tigers 45, senior QB Mike Wray passed complete for a gain to senior HB Roy-Al Edwards.
FB MacCleary would attempt to rush on 2nd & 4 only to be stopped by Trevor Viviani and Dave Hansell for a short gain. Fraiser, MacCleary and junior HB Keith Belson would combine for 10 yards on the next three plays – all rushing attempts – and a 1st down (second of the drive).
After a 13-yard penalty on the offense and a 10-yard penalty on the defense, the Panthers Eric Fraiser ran for 4 yards on 2nd & 11 from the Tigers 31. MacCleary got the call on 3rd & 7 only to be stopped by the Tigers senior DT Perry Koliatsis 4 yards short of the 1st down.
The Tigers defense early on was struggling in stopping the run but found composure and poise when it mattered. On 4th & 4 from the Tigers 24, Mike Wray dropped back to pass but was chased and crushed in the backfield for a 7-yard loss by Koliatsis and junior DE Pete Massaro. Ouch.
That first drive by the Panthers proved to be their 2nd most productive of the evening (after going 7yds in 3 plays and 1 yard in 3 plays respectively) until their 4th and last drive of the first half.
With 8:27 left to go in the half, Strath Haven started their longest drive of the game in yardage and number of plays. The Panthers started from their own 43 and went 38 yards in 12 plays mostly because of the pounding FB Rich MacCleary. MacCleary rushed 6 times on the drive for 22 yards. On the first play of the drive, Wray completed a pass, which was beautifully caught by Roy-Al Edwards for 17 yards. Belson and Benson helped out providing 2 key rushing attempts for 1st downs. On 3rd & 6 from the Tigers 13, Aaron Benson dropped back to pass but was sacked by Trevor Viviani for a loss of 6. This set up a critical 4th and 12 from the 19 – Benson’s pass intended for Edwards was broken up by junior DB Brandon Rook.
Offensively, the Tigers looked dreadful over their first three drives going a total of 4 yards in 9 plays including Liberty getting sacked by senior OLB Ben Skalina for a 3 yard loss in the second Marple Newtown drive. Marple Newtown’s 4th and final drive of the first half started from their 19 yard line and went 27 yards in 5 plays only to be stopped by the halftime buzzer.
Clearly, Coach Gionta and his staff made the appropriate offensive adjustments during halftime as the Tigers came out swinging on their first drive of the second half. In fact, Marple Newtown scored on all four offensive drives they had after halftime, scoring 3 touchdowns – 1 receiving, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 rushing.
After a Ted Seiler 18 yard kickoff return to the 29, the Tigers rushing attack took over bleeding 8:16 off the clock before the first points were scored by the leg of Seiler. Juniors John Rutecki, Steve Giordano, and John Gallagher all combined for 42 yards in 12 rushing attempts including 3 first downs. On 3rd and 8 from the Panthers 46, Liberty passed complete to senior TE Pat Aigeldinger for 16 yards that eventually set up a 30-yard field goal attempt from the 13-yard line. Ted Seiler’s kick was good for 3 points with 3:44 left to go in the third quarter.
Strath Haven went 4 yards in 3 plays in their first drive of the second half which ended on 3rd & 6 from their 17. Wray tried to complete a long pass intended for Benson only to have it picked off close to the Panthers sideline by John Rutecki at the 46, returning it 7 yards to the 39.
Marple Newtown would start their second drive of the secdond with excellent field position. They went 39 yards in 9 plays including an 11-yard holding penalty on the start of the drive. Rutecki and Liberty combined for 37 rushing yards on 5 attempts including a critical 3rd & 11 run that allowed Rutecki to gain 16 yards taking the ball to the Panther’s 24-yard line. John Gallagher rushed for 5 on 1st down; Liberty passed incomplete on 2nd and ran his way to the second 1st down of the drive on 3rd & 5 from the Haven 19. That play eventually lead to a Tiger’s 3rd & 12 from the 15 – Liberty dropped back rolled slightly to his left and passed complete to a wide open Gallagher in the end zone for the first touchdown of the game with 10:19 remaining in the fourth quarter (Seiler extra point was good).
The Panthers opened their sixth drive of the game with a 22-yard kickoff return by Aaron Benson. That drive went negative 5 yards in 4 plays after Aaron Benson was sacked by sophomore LB Dan Giordano for a loss of 14 yards on 4th & 1 from their own 47.
The Tigers took over at the 33-yard line rushing Seiler and Gallagher for a combine 25 yards on 4 plays that set-up a 3rd and 3 from the 13. Ted Seiler rushed for a gain of about 6 yards fumbling the ball around the 7-yard line that was finally recovered in the end zone by Jon Liberty for their second touchdown with 4:36 left in the game (Seiler extra point was good).
After a 21-yard kickoff return by Edwards, Strath Haven looked desperate trying to get the ball into Tigers territory – which they never did in the second half. Their seventh drive of the game went –10 yards in 4 plays that included two sacks by the miserly Tigers defense. Massaro and senior DE Vinny Quercetti combined for a loss of 15 total yards on both sacks. Haven attempted to pass on 4th & 20 – Wray’s pass fell incomplete intended for Benson, Tigers took over for their eighth and final drive of the game.
From 1st and 10 from the Panthers 25, Senior HB (and kicker) Ted Seiler redeemed himself rushing the ball 25 yards for the Tiger’s final touchdown of the night with 2:37 left in regulation.
Strath Haven opened the final drive with their longest play in the half – a 26-yard kickoff return by Roy-Al Edwards. That drive went 13 yards in 5 plays but the game was over as the Panthers began substituting their regulars with some younger, greener players.

Congratulations to senior HB/LB/K Ted Seiler for his performance on Friday night. Seiler contributed in several different ways in Marple Newtown’s victory over Strath Haven.
