Tigers Lose Heartbreaker

By Greg Pecko

NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA - The Marple Newtown Tigers suffered a heartbreaking loss last night in the final thirty seconds of the game against the Springfield Cougars. The Tigers (0-5) put in a gritty and tough performance against the Cougars (2-3) but came up 5 points shy of a win with a 21-17 loss.

The Tigers opened the game with a big drive and their offense dominated the first half of the game. The Tigers jumped out to a 10-0 lead for most of the first half behind the stellar play of junior quarterback Kevin Johnson and senior tailback Phil Graziano. Johnson scored a touchdown in the first quarter on short option play that gave the Tigers a quick 7 points.

The Tigers would then grab 3 more points after a long drive that ended with a 30-plus yard field goal by kicker Adam Fender. The Springfield Cougars would eventually answer with a touchdown of their own late in the 2nd quarter but the Tigers defense played a solid game and were able to slow down and stop the Cougars for most of the half.

After a scoreless 3rd quarter for both teams that was dominated by both defensive squads, the 4th quarter would be one for the ages. The Cougars were able to score on short run to take a 14-10 lead with just under 7 minutes left in the game.

However, the Tigers would show their determination on an 11 play drive that ate up around three and a half minutes of clock and would give them another touchdown and a 17-14 lead. Kevin Johnson lead the drive and broke through with a 25 yard pass to Carl Kasarsky that pushed the Tigers into Cougars territory and setup a final push into the end zone.

The touchdown drive would be capped by another rushing touchdown by Johnson on a 2 yard option run with Johnson lowering his head into the end-zone. The hard fought game on both sides would then be decided in the final 2 minutes of play with the Cougars on offense.

The Cougars pushed their way into the Tigers red-zone with less than a minute to play and the Tigers Defense was able to dig in and force the Cougars to fight along the goal line for the final 40 seconds. The Tigers stopped the Cougars and 1st and 2nd downs along the goal line. Then on 3rd down Carl Kasarsky had a chance to intercept a pass that just slipped out of his hands due to the wet conditions.

However, on 4th down the Cougars ran a quick slant pattern and were able to score dealing a crushing blow to the Tigers. Despite the heartbreaking loss the Tigers showed that they are better than their record shows and in a game were both teams deserved to win the Tigers can walk away believing that they would have won if only they had more time on the clock to get down field.

Player Profile: Senior Tailback/Defensive Back #20 Phil Graziano

By Greg Pecko

In a Wing-T offense that the Marple Newtown Tigers run, the pressure is put on the running game and the tailbacks asked to carry the ball. For the Tigers, they have one of the best running backs in the Central Athletic League in senior Phil Graziano.

Graziano does not just run the ball, he overpowers the defense by leaning forward for every inch he can get. Graziano is a bruising running back who is the engine that runs the Tigers offense which sets up the rest of the offensive game plan.

Graziano has rushed the ball 74 times so far this season for a total of 366 yards and one touchdown. While averaging just under 5 yards a carry, Graziano has played a major role for the Tigers in many facets of the game.

He plays on all three units - offense, defense and special teams for the Tigers. On the defensive side of the ball, he has 22 total tackles and has been able to force one fumble. Additionally, Graziano has been the feature return man on special teams and has returned the ball 11 times for a total of 266 yards with and average of 24.2 yards per return.

However, one of the greatest features that Graziano has may not show up in the stat book. Graziano is one of three team captains and is a true team leader. He provides an emotional spark for the team no matter what side of the ball he is on.

Graziano is the definition of senior leadership and he will be a major player in how the Tigers perform as the season progresses.

Haverford Defeats Marple Newtown

By Greg Pecko

NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA - The Marple Newtown Tigers (0-4) lost to Haverford (3-1) Friday night by a score of 30-0. Despite being shut out, the Tigers had a productive night on both sides of the ball as their offense was able to move the ball at will but just missed on a few scoring drives.

The offense was led by senior tailback Phil Graziano as he racked up a lot of yards on the ground and was able to break several big runs. Also contributing to the offense's gritty performance were young players like Mario Dioguardi and Kevin Johnson who were able to make large gains both on the ground and through the air.

The Tigers defense was strong most of the game and were able to stop the Fords on several drives throughout the game on Friday night. Steve Reynolds and Nick Stephens had two strong defensive performances for the Tigers.

The final score of this game doesn't justify just how close this game was from beginning to end. If the ball bounced the other way a few times the score would be a completely different and one that may have favored the Tigers.

The Tigers now look to next weeks game against Springfield at Harry Harvey stadium for a rare Saturday match up at 7 pm. with coverage provided by

Player Profile: Sophomore Defensive Back #18 Ryan White

By Greg Pecko

Defensive Back Ryan White is one of the many young players on a Marple Newtown Tigers team that has 32 underclassmen of which 21 are sophomores. This young squad has a bright future and looks to contend in the Central League over the next several years and with White already developing quickly at the corner position the defense is going to be a cornerstone of the Tigers' program.

So far this season White is starting to influence games and has shown that he has the ability to develop into a great cornerback and an even better defensive leader. White has accumulated 10 tackles in just the first three games of the season and leads the defense with 2 interceptions this season.

White is on pace to rack up around 40 tackles and around 8 interceptions for the 12 game season. Even though the first couple games have not gone as planned for the Tigers (0-3) White's performance has been a bright spot for the young Tigers who are starting to develop chemistry and skills as this team progresses.

White has the potential to have great career in a Marple Newtown uniform and as long as he continues to work and hone his skills White should be a staple in the Tigers' defense in the coming seasons. How White develops at the cornerback will signal how the Tigers' program develops as a whole.

White and this Tigers' team should be better at by the end of this season then the way they started and for a young team like this Tigers squad that is a great sign for the future of the program.

The Tigers' will face the Haverford Fords Friday, September 19th at 7 pm in Harry Harvey Stadium with podcast coverage provided by the Tigers' Radio Network.

Tigers Fall to Garnet Valley, 41-13

By Greg Pecko

The Marple Newtown Tigers (0-3) fought hard Friday night in their 41-13 loss to the Garnet Valley Jaguars (3-0). The Tigers put on tough inspired performance and several players played hard from whistle to whistle, like Senior tailback Phil Graziano who carried the load for the Tigers' ground game. Graziano also had a huge kick return on special teams in the first quarter when he ran down to the Jaguars' 33 yard line, for total return of 67 yards.

The Tigers were able to shut the Jaguars offense down in the second half of the game, keeping Garnet Valley off the board in both the 3rd and 4th quarters of the game. The Tigers defense fought very hard, including tough performances by Seniors
Steve Reynolds, Kyle Itri and Joe Carini. Junior Tevin Gilbert recorded his first sack of the season.

The Tigers were put on the board by Sophomore tailback
Mario Dioguardi in the 3rd quarter on a 5 yard scamper for the Tigers first touchdown. Dioguardi had several keys runs in the 7 play 60 plus yard drive that set the Tigers up for the touchdown.

Junior quarterback
Kevin Johnson added on 6 more points in the latter half of the 4th quarter when he pushed his way through the pile on a 1 yard quarterback sneak. The touchdown was setup by a Steve DeMaria punt block that was returned to the Jaguars goal line and gave the Tigers a huge boost. DeMaria's block and scamper capped off a solid evening for the special teams unit that had blocked an extra point attempt (Kevan Strigle) earlier in the game and had several punt and kick returns. Junior kicker Adam Fender added his first career extra point and boomed a kickoff into the end zone for a touchback.

The Tigers return home next week to face the Haverford Fords at 7 pm at Harry Harvey Field.

Tiger's lose as Conestoga's ground game rolls

By Greg Pecko

BERWYN, PA - As time expired Friday night at Conestoga's, Teamer field, all the Marple Newtown Tigers' (0-1) players could think about was the several missed opportunities they had to deal with in their 21-6 loss to the Pioneers (1-0).

The Tigers' defense missed several interception chances in the first quarter after their secondary tipped, but failed to haul in three poor pass attempts made by Pioneer's quarterback Julian Anapolsky. The first quarter would end in a nothing to nothing tie despite several promising drives by both teams that were quickly shutdown due to mental mistakes and solid defense for both squads.

Marple Newtown tailback Nick Stephens made his presence felt early in his Tiger's debut with several carries for large gains on offense and big defensive stops on the other side of the ball. Stephens would finish the day with 71 yards rushing on 15 carries and five tackles on the defense.

As promising as the first quarter was for the Tigers' the rest of the game quickly became a struggle for Marple Newtown as both the offensive and defensive line play was sub-par.

The offensive line, despite helping the running backs to 183 yards on the ground including a touchdown, would allow two sacks and left junior quarterback Kevin Johnson hurried on nearly every pass play. Johnson would finish 3 for 8 through the air for only 21 yards and two interceptions.

The Tigers' young defensive line showed their inexperience throughout the game and failed to put any real pressure on the Pioneer's backfield. The Pioneer's ground game was able to move almost at will as speedy Pioneer tailback Leighton Dennis was able to rush for 189 yards on 29 carries and one touchdown.

Probably the most telling statistic of the game was that the defensive line registered no sacks and allowed 235 yards rushing with an average of 5.7 yards per rush. Despite the struggles, however, Marple Newtown found themselves down by only 7 points at the end of the first half.

The tiger's defense played better early in the 3rd quarter by slowing down the Pioneer rushing attack inside the red-zone during the opening drive of the second half. They would block a Pioneer's field goal attempt with around four minutes to go in the 3rd quarter.

However, after the Tiger's offense was forced to punt it away on their next possession, a big punt return for the Pioneer's set them up inside the Tiger's 25-yard line. Leighton Dennis would once again lead the ground charge as Conestoga scored on a three play 20-plus yard drive making the score 14 to nothing in favor of the Pioneer's.

The Tiger's offense would emerge late in the third quarter as senior tailback Phil Graziano would carry three times for 37-yards including a 19 yard touchdown run, in which he broke several tackles and with shear determination he picked up the Tiger's first points of the 2008 campaign.

Graziano was one of the few bright spots as he led all rushers with 131 yards rushing on 18 carries. Graziano added 69 yards on two kick returns and contributed with 6 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.

But even Graziano's solid performance proved to be too little fire power to take down Conestoga as the Pioneers walked away with a 21-6 win over the Tigers.

The Tigers' look now to their home-opener as they will take on perennial Central League power Strath Haven (0-1) this Friday at Harry Harvey Stadium, kickoff is schedule for 7:00 pm, with podcast coverage provide by the Tigers' Radio Network.
