Tigers Win by a Finger-Tip, Finish Season 6-6
By Greg Pecko
NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA - The Marple Newtown Tigers (6-6) escaped Friday night with a win by a finger tip over the Academy Park Knights (7-5).
With the score being 17-10 in favor of the Tigers Friday with only a little over two minutes left on the clock the Tigers made a mistake that set up probably the most memorable win of the 2008 campaign.
Junior quarterback Kevin Johnson fumbled the football on what looked to be a questionable call by the officials. However, after the dust cleared the Knights had the football and were on the Tigers' doorstep.
From there it would be up to the Tigers' defense and special teams to make something special happen in order to end the season at five hundred.
The Knights ran several plays that ran the clock down to a minute and they would finally punch the ball into the end-zone on a quarterback draw with only fifty seconds remaining. At that point it appeared as if the season may have to be extend into an overtime contest.
Unless the Tigers' special teams unit, which had already blocked a combine six field goal and extra point attempts, had other plans to end the night right on time. Under wet conditions the Knights lined-up an point after attempt and after a high snap the Tigers burst in on the right side of the line and two tigers were able to tip the ball, which float toward, but fell just short of the cross-bar making the score 17-16.
For the Tigers' this spelled victory as they went on to recover the onside kick and then came out in the victory formation to kneel the ball twice ending the season on high note a 6-6. The Tigers' finished this season by winning five straight games and six of their final seven of the season.
Friday nights win was fueled by a strong ground game led by Senior running backs Phil Graziano and Nick Stephens on the offensive side of the football. Additionally, Stephens and Senior Dan Giordano rallied their defensive squad in the second half which helped bring the Tigers back from an early 10-3 deficit.
For the 2008 Tigers football program the season came full-circle as they were able to recover from a rough start of the year with a young squad. As the season progressed a team that had 32 underclassmen including 21 sophomores was able to build confidence and chemistry, which led to a stellar end to the season.

Tigers Win Three in a Row
By Greg Pecko
NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA - After Friday night, the Marple Newtown Tigers are just one win away from having an even record on the season. The Tigers (5-6) handily defeated St. Pius X (0-9) last night by a score of 38-6.
The Tigers' offense outperformed the Winged Lions defense on both the ground and through the air as several Tigers contributed on offense. Senior tailback Phil Graziano once again led the way on the ground as he picked up a couple of touchdowns.
Graziano also ran a kickoff back 85 yards for a touchdown to open the second half and put a strangle-hold on the game. From that point in the game, the Tigers never looked back and rolled to the easy victory.
Junior quarterback Kevin Johnson had another great game through the air Friday as he had a near perfect quarterback rating and threw a touchdown pass to senior Dan Giordano. Johnson also made several outstanding plays on defense as he came up with several key pass deflections at the corner-back position.
Tailbacks Nick Stephens and Mario Dioguardi also had good games on offense and the ran the ball for big yardage and setup several touchdowns.
The Tigers defense kept the Winged Lions off the scoreboard for most of the game and their only score came well into the fourth quarter as the game was out of reach. Defensive lineman Joe Carini had a solid game defensively by making several key tackles and provided solid coverage on special teams.
The Tigers will look to get to 6-6 next week against Academy Park for the final game of the 2008 campaign. The game is set for 7 p.m. at Harry Harvey stadium next friday. Coverage will be provided by http://www.marplenewtownfootball.com/ and http://www.eyeofthetigersblog.com/.

Tigers roll past Harriton, 38-7
By Greg Pecko
ROSEMONT, PA - The Marple Newtown Tigers (4-6) picked up another win Friday night at Harriton with a 38-7 win over the Rams. With two games remaining in the season, the Tigers are hoping to win both and finish at 6-6.
Senior tailback Phil Graziano had another stellar night on the ground with 179 yards rushing on 17 carries and he had four touchdowns as well. Graziano, a week after going over 1000 yards on the season, has now set his eyes on 1,500 yards and has an outside shot at hitting that mark.
Junior quarterback Kevin Johnson also had a great night through the air Friday as he was a perfect four for four passing with 134 yards passing and 2 touchdowns. Johnson finished the game with an unbelievable passer rating of 546.40 for the game.
The Tigers offense was able to accumulate over 350 yards of total offense both on the ground and through the passing game. The second quarter of the game was huge for the offense as they were able to score 20 points and distance themselves from Harriton.
The Tigers also had a great game on the defensive side of the football as they nearly shutout the Rams offense on their home field.
The defense was led by senior linebacker Dan Giordano who had 10 total tackles in the win Friday. The defense had a total of 3 sacks in the game with Giordano, Nick Stephens, Joe Carini and Kevin Lopez all contributing to that number.
The Tigers will be at home for their final two games of the season and next week they take on St. Pius X at Harry Harvey Stadium at 7 pm.
