HAVERTOWN, PA - Marple Newtown continued to show that it is a team to be reckoned with this year. The Tigers dominated and cruised past Haverford on Friday night. From the opening drive, the Marple Newtown football team did not look back. The Tigers defeated Haverford 42-3. It was a very impressive victory and showed the continued progress of a very talented football team.
Mario Dioguardi got the scoring started when he darted for a 15-yard touchdown run with 7:17 remaining on the first quarter clock. This touchdown was the culmination of an opening drive that saw the Tigers move the ball at will. This touchdown took Dioguardi's total to three on the year and his yards per carry is now 6.7 yards per rush for the season. The next drive was much of the same for the Tigers. In this drive, Ryan White ran for a 42-yard gain, his longest and the team’s longest gain from scrimmage to date this year. After that, Ryan Duffy continued his season long ground attack and punched the ball in the end zone for a six yard touchdown run with 1:18 remaining on the first quarter clock. Ryan White would end up with 10 rushes and 85 yards on the night, he would also contribute five catches for 57-yards including a touchdown reception.
The second quarter continued to be the same formula as the defense would get off the field and the Tigers offense would end up in the end zone. Brian Kelly and Johnnie Watkins continued to excel in tackling; both players looked sharp and talented on the defensive side of the ball. The defense recorded 44 tackles on the night and forced three turnovers and this marked another night were the Tigers won the turnover battle. Kevin Johnson threw a touchdown pass and ran for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter. His pass was completed for seven yards to Carl Kasarsky for the touchdown which was Kasarsky’s first touchdown catch of the year and his fifth touchdown on the season. It was Johnson’s second rushing touchdown on the season.
Both teams scored in the third quarter when Haverford kicker Pat Hughes connected on a 25-yard field goal. Marple Newtown scored on a touchdown pass from Johnson to White with 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Dioguardi added to his touchdown total by running into the end zone from 3-yards out. Kevin Johnson continued to shine at quarterback as he has yet to throw an interception on this season and consistently gives his players a chance to make plays around him. On the night, he ended 10 out of 11 for 143 yards with 2 touchdowns and a rushing touchdown. If he continues to play this well and the defense continues to be this strong it will only get better for the Marple Newtown Tigers.
