TIGERS WREAK HAVOC OVER RAMS, 56-8

By Chris McSweeney
Tigers Radio Network

ROSEMONT, PA - The Marple Newtown Tigers displayed total dominance tonight against the Harriton Rams. The Rams proved no match for the Tigers right from the start. Marple Newtown displayed a balanced offense and a dominant defense that continued to tackle well and frustrate the Rams offense.

The first score of the game came on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Kevin Johnson with 3:31 remaining in the first quarter. This would be the only score in the first quarter and Marple would lead 7-0 going into the second. In the second, Johnson got on the board again with another quarterback sneak for a touchdown, this time it was for two yards, and the score came with 11:21 remaining. The scoring continued in the second when Carl Kasarsky caught a beautiful pass and run for a 50-yard score. This score came with 9:17 remaining; the next score for the Tigers came with 5:05 remaining when Ryan Duffy ran for a 12-yard score. The Tigers scored again when Ryan White ran for a fantastic, darting, 40-yard run with 1:36 left. The Tigers would lead the Rams 35-0 at the half.

The third quarter brought more of the same with Cimirrow Moat getting on the scoreboard twice. This was a fantastic quarter for Moat who scored twice, first with a 65-yard blistering touchdown run up the sidelines. The next score came when Moat broke through on special teams, blocked a Harriton punt, picked up the ball and ran it for a score from 15-yards out. This would put the Tigers up 49-0 after three.

In the fourth, the Rams finally got on the board when Nick Maguire scored on a 7-yard touchdown run. The Rams went for two and converted when Patrick Moriarity ran it in from his quarterback position. The final score of the game came from the Tigers running back Ryan Schollenberger, who carried the ball for 18-yards with three minutes remaining in the game.

Overall it was a very dominant game from the Tigers stand point. Marple Newtown played great tonight whether it was offense, defense, or special teams. Adam Fender was brilliant tonight connecting on all of his extra point kicks as he went 8 for 8.

Next week, the Tigers will play their final regular season home game against Radnor. Marple Newtown will look to continue their winning streak and tremendous play toward a PIAA District One Class AAA playoff invitation.

White Proves He is King in Victory Over Royals

By Chris McSweeney
Tigers Radio Network

UPPER DARBY, PA - The Marple Newtown Tigers defeated the Upper Darby Royals last Friday to put their season record to 6-2. This record sets up the Tigers to finish strong and hopefully enter the postseason playoff picture. The Tigers defeated the Royals in Upper Darby 23-0. It was a dominant win that saw the Tigers defense really kick it into high gear and come out with a shutout.

Ryan White continued his fantastic season from the running back position scoring twice in the game. The first of his two touchdowns came in the first quarter with 11:25 remaining on the clock. White ran the ball for 33 yards on the score further cementing himself as the big play back on the team and showcasing his speed and eagerness to get into the end zone. The touchdown party continued for Ryan White as he was on the end of a beautiful touchdown throw of 14 yards from Kevin Johnson with 5:48 remaining. These scores would give Marple Newtown a 13-0 edge after one quarter. Ryan White had an amazing night rushing the ball; he surpassed 200 yards on the ground ending up with 207 on 13 carries he also caught two passes for 23 yards. He is gaining confidence every Friday night and continues to showcase his football talents on a weekly basis. This personal performance rated as one of the best in the league on the night. Ryan Duffy his rushing partner continued his great season with more than 100 yards on the ground.

In the second quarter there was only one score. Adam Fender, the Tigers excellent place kicker was able to make up for an earlier extra point mishap. Fender stepped up to attempt a 32 yard field goal and drilled it through the uprights. This gave the Tigers a 16 point lead at halftime and the shut out by the defense was still intact.

In the second half, there was only one score to report. In the third quarter, quarterback Kevin Johnson continued his steady and confident play at the position. He stepped back and threw a 28 yard touchdown pass to Vince Christiana with 7:11 remaining in the quarter. This would be the final tally for the Tigers on the night and ultimately the final tally of the whole game.

The Tigers were challenged in the fourth quarter to keep their shutout intact and they stepped up to the challenge brilliantly. With the Royals finally getting it close to the goaline the Tigers were forced to tighten their chin straps and really dig deep if they wanted to post their second shutout on the season. With the defense facing a fourth and goal, everyman stepped up their game and was able to stop the Royals in the dying seconds of the game. Every player reacted with a sense of achievement and success, the shutout meant a lot to the Tigers. The Marple Newtown defense was led on Friday night by Vince Christiana with 7 tackles and by Brian Kelly who tallied up 6 tackles.

The Tigers are a very good team and look to continue their away success as they take on Harriton next week. With the playoff picture starting to take shape the Tigers need to continue to play the way they are playing and keep their eyes on the prize. Coach Gionta will have them playing hard at practice this week and keep the team heading in the right direction.

Jaguars Continue Road Dominance at Harry Harvey Stadium

By Chris McSweeney
Tigers Radio Network

NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA - Friday night was a tough one to swallow for the Marple Newtown Tigers. Garnet Valley came into Harry Harvey stadium and continued its perfect form away from home. However, it was not without a valiant effort and fight from the Tigers. In a game in which weather was as much of a player as anyone on either team, each team displayed heart and a great deal of character. With rain that lasted all day and temperatures below 50 degrees at kickoff, it was expected that each team would struggle in all facets of the game.

This however did not happen last Friday. Both teams came out and played to a close 7-0 Garnet Valley victory. It was a defensive struggle to say the least. It was hard for the offenses to get going in the horrible conditions but both running attacks were working. Both quarterbacks were protected well also. The Jaguars only score of the game, and the one that ultimately decided the fate of Friday night’s game, came in late in the first quarter.

With 2:09 remaining in the 1st quarter, Marcellus Irving took a carry down the left side from 15-yards out and took it to the house. It was some tough running and proved to be the only score of the game. Both the Jaguars and Tigers continued to plow away at the opposing defenses but neither would break. The Tigers continued to display their running attack throughout the whole game. The Tigers had 11 first downs and 10 of these were a result of a rushing play. The same held true for the Jaguars who had 16 first downs, 13 of which came from rushing plays. It was quite clear that both teams had established their rushing attacks and battled in the trenches all night long.

Ryan Duffy continued his great season by adding 78 more yards to his rushing total. He has stepped up to be the feature back in this offense and it is proving to be a very good thing. Alex Warden led the Jaguar's rushing attack on the other side of the ball with 101 yards in Friday night’s contest. With all the running plays from Friday night, there were a lot of tackles to be had. Vince Christiana led the way for the Tigers with 7 tackles. Matt Gregory, Brian Kelly, and Carl Kasarsky followed him with 6 tackles each. Playing outstanding defense on other side of the ball was Eric Warden. From his linebacker position Warden made a total of 12 tackles, one of which was a sack on quarterback Kevin Johnson. Eric Warden timed his blitz to perfection and got in free on the quarterback in the fourth quarter forcing the Tigers to throw deep on the next play resulting in a Johnson interception, his first of the season.

It’s tough to have a loss in a game like Friday’s, but that is how it goes and unfortunately the Tigers had to be that team. But they went down with a fantastic fight and played strong for all four quarters. With tough weather and an even tougher opponent, the Tigers played their hearts out. They look to get back to winning ways next week at Upper Darby High School.

Garnet Valley Spoils Marple Newtown's Homecoming

By Steve Scoleri
Tigers Radio Network

NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA - It was a wet and dreary Homecoming night for Marple Newtown as their hot streak came to an end against Garnet Valley losing a heartbreaker by a 7-0 score. Both defenses played well but Garnet Valley was able to move the ball just enough to get the only score of the game.

The score came late in the first quarter with 2:09 remaining when Marcellus Irving had a 15-yard touchdown run that put Garnet Valley up 7-0 and it was the deciding factor of the game.

Marple did move the ball well on a few drives and were stopped on a key 4th down conversion inside Garnet Valley’s five yard line. This seemed to give Garnet Valley a momentum swing to close out the game.

It was a tough loss for Marple Newtown but nothing to hang their heads on because they are playing well and are still in the running for a District One Class AAA playoff spot. Marple looks to come back strong next week when they play Upper Darby on the road.

Duffy Leads Tigers To Victory Over the Panthers

By Steve Scoleri
Tigers Radio Network

NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA - Alumni night was a night to remember for the Marple Newtown Tigers starting right from the opening kickoff against the Strath Haven Panthers. After being beat last year 36-0 by the Panthers, Marple had the upper hand this year beating the Panthers 14-7 to improve to 5-1 on the season.

After winning the opening coin toss, Marple Newtown chose to receive which turned out to be a great call for the Tigers. Ryan White was back deep to return and once he touched the ball you could see his speed was not going to be denied. Ryan White exploded down the field and made a beautiful spin move to take the opening kickoff all the way to the house with a 92-yard kickoff return with 11:25 remaining in the first quarter. This was just what Marple Newtown was looking for to get an early lead against a good team.

The scoring might have been low but Marple Newtown was able to do a nice job in controlling the ball and coming up with key defensive stops against the Strath Haven Panthers. Strath Haven was 2 for 8 on third down conversions and 1 for 3 on fourth down conversions. The Tiger's defense made it tough for Strath Haven to get anything going offensively. A key momentum swing was when Strath Haven elected to go for it on fourth down on their opening possession when they could have kicked an easy field goal to get them on the scoreboard. They missed the attempt and from there on Marple Newtown seemed to know they had a shot to take it to them.

The running attack of Marple Newtown proved to be key in controlling the clock and moving the chains. Ryan Duffy did a nice job being the featured back in the offense. He had 20 rushes for 86 yards. In the third quarter, he was able to punch it into the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up.

Not only was Ryan Duffy a huge offensive star of the game, but he also came up huge on the defensive side of the ball. With Strath Haven threatening to score, Ryan Duffy makes a great interception to stall the drive. This play was crucial in the game for both sides.

Strath Haven would not go away without a fight. Quarterback Bryan Downs threw to Patrick Fisher for a 27-yard touchdown to get them back in the game. They were just one onside kick recovery from having a shot to tie the game. Marple Newtown did have trouble recovering onside kicks against Conestoga but this was a different night and a different outcome. The Tigers were able to recover the onside kick with no problems which was a huge sigh of relief for everyone in Harry Harvey Stadium. Marple Newtown was able to run out the rest of the clock and record a tally in the win column.

This was a huge win for the Marple Newtown Tigers in the Central Athletic League. This team is opening up many eyes and is showing they are firing on all cylinders. They treat every game important no matter who they face. This is showing to be a magical season for the Tigers and they hope to continue their dominance against Garnet Valley next week.

TIGERS DEFEAT STRATH HAVEN AT HOME, 14-7

By Chris McSweeney
Tigers Radio Network

NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA - Tonight marked another example of how strong this Marple Newtown Tigers football team can be. The Tigers beat the Strath Haven Panthers by a score of 14-7. This game erased the memory of last years defeat by the Panthers of 36-0. This game was immediately different as the Tigers got on the board right off the bat. The Tigers won the toss and elected to recieve the ball and that proved to be the best decision possible.

Running back Ryan White recieved the kickoff and took it back 92 yards for a fantastic touchdown. The blocking was absolutely beautiful on the kick return and Ryan White followed them all the way up. He had one last defender to beat and made a gorgeous spin move around the defender to reach the endzone. This was the Tigers first kick-off return for a touchdown on the season. Showing that Ryan White has become this offense go-to-guy when they need a spark off a big play. This touchdown immediately got rid of the pressure and the zero from last year.

The Tigers continued to dominate on the ground, almost running the ball at-will. Ryan Duffy continued his play as the feature back in the offense. He scored a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The Panthers got back into the game at the end to make it a little interesting as Bryan Downs passed to Patrick Fisher for a 27-yard touchdown. It proved too little too late for the Panthers as the Tigers recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock on the final plays of the game.

This was a dominating win in the Central Athletic League and continued to show how good this Tigers offense and defense can be. The team will play Garnet Valley next week at Harry Harvey stadium, it is a 6:30 start so be sure to show up earlier than normal.

Tigers Throttle Fords, 42-3

By Chris McSweeney
Tigers Radio Network

HAVERTOWN, PA - Marple Newtown continued to show that it is a team to be reckoned with this year. The Tigers dominated and cruised past Haverford on Friday night. From the opening drive, the Marple Newtown football team did not look back. The Tigers defeated Haverford 42-3. It was a very impressive victory and showed the continued progress of a very talented football team.

Mario Dioguardi got the scoring started when he darted for a 15-yard touchdown run with 7:17 remaining on the first quarter clock. This touchdown was the culmination of an opening drive that saw the Tigers move the ball at will. This touchdown took Dioguardi's total to three on the year and his yards per carry is now 6.7 yards per rush for the season. The next drive was much of the same for the Tigers. In this drive, Ryan White ran for a 42-yard gain, his longest and the team’s longest gain from scrimmage to date this year. After that, Ryan Duffy continued his season long ground attack and punched the ball in the end zone for a six yard touchdown run with 1:18 remaining on the first quarter clock. Ryan White would end up with 10 rushes and 85 yards on the night, he would also contribute five catches for 57-yards including a touchdown reception.

The second quarter continued to be the same formula as the defense would get off the field and the Tigers offense would end up in the end zone. Brian Kelly and Johnnie Watkins continued to excel in tackling; both players looked sharp and talented on the defensive side of the ball. The defense recorded 44 tackles on the night and forced three turnovers and this marked another night were the Tigers won the turnover battle. Kevin Johnson threw a touchdown pass and ran for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter. His pass was completed for seven yards to Carl Kasarsky for the touchdown which was Kasarsky’s first touchdown catch of the year and his fifth touchdown on the season. It was Johnson’s second rushing touchdown on the season.

Both teams scored in the third quarter when Haverford kicker Pat Hughes connected on a 25-yard field goal. Marple Newtown scored on a touchdown pass from Johnson to White with 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Dioguardi added to his touchdown total by running into the end zone from 3-yards out. Kevin Johnson continued to shine at quarterback as he has yet to throw an interception on this season and consistently gives his players a chance to make plays around him. On the night, he ended 10 out of 11 for 143 yards with 2 touchdowns and a rushing touchdown. If he continues to play this well and the defense continues to be this strong it will only get better for the Marple Newtown Tigers.
